Kaohsiung, Taiwan ||

📍Kaohsiung Martyrs’ Shrine
Address: No. 32, Zhongyi Rd, Gushan District, Kaohsiung

The shrine is accessible from either National Sun Yat-sen University or Kaohsiung MRT’s Sizihwan Station.

However, the entire route is going uphill. So, you’re not used to walk uphill (for a long period of time), you might want to rent a scooter;-)

The original structure was built as a Shinto shrine during the Japanese rule of Taiwan and demolished in 1972 when Japan established the diplomatic tie with the PRC. The current building was re-built in 1978.

The Great Hall houses the spirit tablets of revolution martyrs of the ROC.

The hall is flanked on both sides by the verandas. On one side, the photographs on the wall narrate the historic figures (e.g. Dr. Sun Yat-sen) and events that led to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and establish the Republic of China (ROC).

On the other side, the photos outline key events during the Second Sino-Japanese War, including the Marco Polo Bridge Incidents (1937), the Battle of Shanghai (1937), the Battle of West Hunan (1945), General He Yingqin representing the Chinese government to accept the surrender of Japanese troops in China (1945).

❤️💗😍😻😹

Shoushan Love Lookout, one of Kaohsiung’s hotspots for photographers, is just outside of the shrine. From here, one can have a panoramic view of the cityscape and the harbor.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan ||

I went to Taiwan for about two weeks this past February and visited Taipei, Kaohsiung, Kenting (the southernmost point of Taiwan) and Taichung.

Here’re my memory of Taiwan:)

Kaohsiung || 高雄

Kaohsiung’s old name, Takow, originates from the aboriginal language. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan, it was renamed as Takao in Japanese, and written in Kanji (Chinese characters) as 高雄.

Located on the west side of the city, Sizihwan Bay faces the vast open waters of the Taiwan Strait, and includes some of the key attractions of Kaohsiung:

– Former British Consulate at Takow
– National Sun Yat-sen University
– Kaohsiung Martyrs’ Shrine
– Shoushan Love Lookout
– Pier-2 Arts District (just a few blocks away in the neighboring Yancheng District)
– Qijin District (a short ferry-ride away)

The original building complex was built in 1865. The Kaohsiung City Government renovated the entire compound in 2010 and opened to the public as a museum.

Follow the path to the top, it’s the former consular residence. After the renovation, it now houses a cafe, a restaurant and a souvenir shop.

Kaohsiung’s skyline can be viewed from one side of the observation deck.

On the other side, it’s the vast view of Sizihwan Bay and the open waters of the Taiwan Strait.

On the bottom of the mountain (hill) is one of Taiwan’s top academic institutions — National Sun Yat-sen University.

The beach area outside of the campus

Sizihwan Tunnel links the campus and Hamasen neighborhood.

Based on my own experience, it’s a shortcut to get back to the Gushan Ferry Pier from the campus. Much quicker than waiting for a bus ;-)
